In an advance toward solving a 50-year-old mystery, scientists are reporting new evidence on how the fluoride in drinking water, toothpastes, mouth rinses and other oral-care products prevents tooth decay. Their report appears in the ACS journalLangumir.
Karin Jacobs and colleagues explain that despite a half-century of scientific research, controversy still exists over exactly how fluoride compounds reduce the risk of tooth decay. That research established long ago that fluoride helps to harden the enamel coating that protects teeth from the acid produced by decay-causing bacteria. Newer studies already found that fluoride penetrates into and hardens a much thinner layer of enamel than previously believed, lending credence to other theories about how fluoride works.
The report describes new evidence that fluoride also works by impacting the adhesion force of bacteria that stick to the teeth and produce the acid that causes cavities. The experiments – performed on artificial teeth (hydroxyapatite pellets) to enable high-precision analysis techniques – revealed that fluoride reduces the ability of decay-causing bacteria to stick, so that also on teeth, it is easier to wash away the bacteria by saliva, brushing and other activity.
Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums (gingiva). It commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth – plaque; this type is called plaque-induced gingivitis.Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress toperiodontitis, which is more serious and can eventually lead to loss of teeth.
A patient with gingivitis will have red and puffy gums, and they will most likely bleed when they brush their teeth. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene – longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. Some people find that using an antiseptic mouthwash, alongside proper tooth brushing and flossing also helps.
In mild cases of gingivitis, patients may not even know they have it, because symptoms are mild. However, the condition should be taken seriously and addressed immediately.
There’s more evidence of the health problems that stem from poor oral health. This is one of the reasons why BeconfiDent focus on Oral health care.
A new study by researchers at the Swedish college Uppsala University found that tooth loss and gum disease raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes. The research team determined that missing teeth increased the enzyme levels of a specific enzyme. It was also discovered that this enzyme raised the risk of inflammation and hardening in the arteries.
The risk increased for every missing tooth. There were even new risk factors added, including high blood pressure, bad cholesterol and the circumference of the waist. The people with fewer teeth were also at an increased risk of suffering from diabetes. Each missing tooth made the person 11 percent more likely to develop diabetes.
Despite the many recent studies that have linked heart health and overall health, there isn’t much data from patients diagnosed with heart problems and how gum disease impacted them before their heart problems.
The best way to avoid any possible health effects from poor oral health is to floss once a day and to use your toothbrush twice a day and of course; visit the dentist on a regular basis.
Brushing your teeth is an important part of your oral hygiene routine. For a healthy mouth and smile BeconfiDent recommends you:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
- Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
- Make sure to use an approved fluoride toothpaste.
The proper brushing technique is to:
- Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
- Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes.
- Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
- To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
- Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Of course, brushing your teeth is only a part of a complete oral care routine. You should also make sure to:
- Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
- Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
- Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

The European Commission has set a new Directive on teeth whitening products! The European Commission has voted for decision that tooth whitening products are classified as cosmetic products under Annex III, Part I of the Cosmetics Directive, 76/768/EEC and there fore there is a new regulation making sure that all tooth whitening products are safe for the user. Beconfident group has been working on the new teeth whitening products since 2011 and will launch them end of October to comply in full with the regulation. Upon advice from the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, the following guidelines have been adopted by the Commission and are to be implemented into a new Directive to be transposed into national legislation by each of the EU member states within 12 months. Only teeth whitening products with less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide may be sold on the open market in the European Union. Products containing between 0.1%-6% hydrogen peroxide content may only be sold to dentists, and only under the following conditions:
The first use of each cycle of the product must be completed by a dentist as a clinical examination, after which use may be continued by the patient. Use of these products by clients under 18 years of age is not permitted, even under supervision of a dentist.
All teeth whitening products with hydrogen peroxide levels higher than 6% are banned in the European Union from 2012-11-01
The new directive strengthens the Commission stance on Hydrogen Peroxide levels for the safety and health of all consumers in the European Union. Beconfident holds the EU certification for the cleaning and whitening foam products and are tested by UK STR / UL for Europe. We apply the strongest manufacturing techniques to assure the highest quality – all for the total customer satisfaction.
Better oral hygiene could lower pneumonia risk
There may be another way to prevent pneumonia this time of year: brush your teeth.
New research from the Yale University School of Medicine discovered changes in mouth bacteria preceded the development of pneumonia in hospital patients. After studying 37 participants over the course of a month, Samit Joshi, M.D., leader of the study, concluded that changes in oral bacteria play some role in a person’s risk for developing pneumonia.
The research team discovered patients on ventilators who contracted pneumonia experienced a significant change in their oral bacteria prior to falling ill. While further research is required to definitively link oral bacteria with pneumonia, other studies have affiliated oral health with respiratory diseases.
“Our findings may improve the way we prevent pneumonia in the future by maintaining the bacteria that live within our mouths,” Dr. Joshi said.
Respiratory illnesses and oral health have been linked for years. Bacterial infections in the chest are believed to be caused by breathing droplets from the mouth and throat into the lungs. Studies have shown a higher pneumonia mortality rate from people who experience an above average amount of gum problems.
“Simply brushing your teeth two minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning in between teeth daily with interdental brushes or floss, cutting down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly, as often as recommended, will be a great starting point,” Dr. Joshi said.
Dr. Joshi presented the research at the Infectious Diseases Society of America annual meeting in October 2011.
